Hi this is my grade 8 portfolio for all of my subjects. In my portfolio I will show you what i have been learning through out the year starting with my math section. After I tell you a little bit about what I have done there is a parent Quiz that you will take so that I can teach you more about what i have learned through out the year. There is also an Language arts section, social studies section, science, phyical education and practical arts sections to my portfolio. There are some things i school that I am good at and others that I need to work on. Two things that I am good at are percent and Art projects. I think that I am good at both of thoughts things because I like to do them. Some things that I could improve on are things like spelling and dividing fractions. My goals for the next six weeks of school are to finish my 2 minutes to make a difference project and also to study for the exams so that I do well.

In looking at your work, I would like to compliment you on the following 2 things:
Your work looked very well organized, I particularily enjoyed seeing drawings you have done for LA. I enjoyed the Math... I don't remember taking a lot of that, but I am sure at some point.... many many years ago I did.
In the last 6 weeks of school I will help you reach your goals by:
Helping you to stay organized since I know you are a very busy person.
My Subjects
Math
Term 1 Reflection
What I learn in term one math was about rate ratio and proportional reasoning. Rate compares two quantities measured in different units like km/hrs. there is unit rate to that is a rate where the second term is one. We also learned about Two-Term and Three-Term Ratios. two-term ratios compares two quantities measured in the same units where as there term ratios compares there quantities measured in the same units. Another thing we learned about is proportional reasoning. Proportional reasoning is a relation ship that says that two ratios or two rates are equal. It can be written in the form of fractions. After we learned about proportional reasoning we learned about Pythagoras theory. The Pythagoras theory is the theory that a squared + b squared= c squared (ex. a=2 and b=4 so a2 + b2 = c2) 2(2)+4(2)=c2 4+16=c2 20=c2
I think that in term 2 I did the best on my volume section. I found the work on that section the easiest. The part that was my favorite was figuring out the answers to the volume questions that had a piece out of them. I think that the thing I struggled on the most was remembering the formulas for the different problems. To do better I will practice the math more and also write things out. I think that by doing that I am more likely remember the things that I have learned for tests and the exam. I learned this term about how to add tax on to a price by using percent. The tax here in Manitoba are 12%. You have to find out what 12% of your price is and then add it to the price. I learned that surface area is measured in square units like cm^2 or km^2. I also learned how to get the surface by taking the shape apart and finding the area of the sides then adding that together to get the total surface area. I also learned about volume. I learned how to get the volume of a cylindrical, rectangular, and triangular prism. To find the volume of a rectangular prism you use the formula v=lxwxh. To find the volume of a triangular prism you use the formula v=bxh/2xh. The last formula was for the cylinder it was v=(pir^2)h. I also learned how to take a piece out of a prism you have to get the volume of both and then subtract the inside shape fro the outside one. The difference between surface area and volume is that volume is telling you what a shape is when you cube it. I is written as cubic.
3. the Man who planted trees relates to me be because I have planted a tree along time ago. It was an evergreen tree and I think that we planted it at my grandpa’s cottage. We had got the trees from church. It can relate to us as in the grade 8’s because we are working to help out the world in our own way. We may not be planting trees but we are creating project to help with other problems around the world. The school can relate to the man who planted trees because I remember years ago the school had planted trees near the school playground. The trees I think were eventually pulled out. The comunity an relate to the play because we have trees down most of our front street and in parks.
5.Different things modivate people and organizations to help the enviroment. It mostly comes down to weather they are running for something which means it could help with votes. If they help there will be a reward, and alot is weather they would do things like that if they were not payed, given something or in any way had things to gain from it. Cars and the cost of “Green” products can stop people from “Going Green”. Some people have to use cars to get to their jobs an the green products just cost to much to buy.
6. Jeans reaction to the forest was that it was nice and he was just so amaized at what Elzeard ws doing. We never saw what the charcoal burners or the Timber Merchants reaction was but I think that they would have been thankful for it because they reliey on trees to be able to have a job and work. Elzeard Bouffier problibly would have loved that forest. I think this because he had planted the whole thing himself and had spent so much time doing that. He was very very deadicated to it. The goverment official and the Member of Parliment really only thought of the trees as a way to get the votes and as some thing to posses. The villager I think whould love the forest and be thankful for it because be for they had it the town was run down and not happy or pretty looking.
10. The trees effected the climate locally by bringing up under ground water to a place that was natually very dry. The climate might have become more humide from the water and the area might have look more like a rain forest. On a global level it might have helped out the air. I think this because humans need oxyegen one of the things that makes up air. anouther thing is Carbon dioxide and trees need that so they breath in CO2 and breath out oxegen for the people and othe animals.
GRADE EIGHT STUDENT ASSIGNMENT- PORTFOLIO REFLECTION TASK/INTENT/CRITERIA Throughout the year I have completed assignments based on Assessment for Learning practices. The learning process has followed the three key components:
Subject: English Language Arts Short Story-"Thank You Ma'am" by Langston Hughes TASK: What was I asked to do for this assignment?
I was required to compose a friendly letter using information from a short story.
INTENT: Why am I completing this assignment?
There are several reasons why I am doing this writing assignment. First I learned the elements of a short story and I learned to identify them in our story. Next, we learned the components to write in a friendly letter format. Then, we applied specific story details and wrote in the first person as if we were a character from the short story.
CRITERIA: How do I know what I needed to do to be successful in completing this assignment?
Use proper friendly letter format referring to letter frame
compose the rough copy letter specific details from the short story and write a letter from the perspective of one of the main perspective of one of the main characters in the story
remember to use appropriate tone and audience for the letter
complete all steps in the writing process as set out in the assignment directions
NEXT STEPS: Upon completion of this assignment I can now..... I can now Identify elements of a short story. I can write a friendly letter.
Social Studies
Definition Cards
Task:To write one of the early peoples definitions and draw a picture to match it.
Intent: To help us learn the definitions and what they look like to help us remember them better.
Criteria:
Write a early peoples definition one to the card
draw a picture to match the definition
color the picture
use creativity
Cro-magnon
Task: To create a drawning of four parts of life as a Cro-Magnon. Intent: The intent is in making this poster was to help us learn about the tools they used, what they ate, the social structure, and the homes they lived in. It did this in a way where we had to draw what it would have looked like. To be able to do that we had to know what the things looked like. Creteria:
To create a poster of cro-magnon life
It had to include 4 topics Homes, food, tools, and social structure
